The Merchant of Venice

Shakespeare’s most troubling play, reconsidered

Harold Bloom examines the play’s equivocal nature. Writing from an early twenty-first-century perspective, he questions how Shylock can be viewed as a comic villain. The commentary acknowledges that Shakespeare’s intentions remain unknowable.

Description

From his book, Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, comes Harold Bloom's commentary on the equivocal nature of Shakespeare's most troubling play, from the perspective of the early twenty-first century. We never will know Shakespeare's intentions, and yet few among us are able to see Shylock as a comic villain.
