Description

This book is a four generational family history that covers major events for the author's family from the late 19th century to the 21st century. 'It stretches from Chaozhou in the imperial Qing dynasty; Penggarang (modern day Desaru) where the author's great-grandfather lay down roots and built a bustling enterprise in rubber, copra and fishing; Singapore, where the family fled to during the Japanese Occupation; New China, where the author's family was exiled to due to her father's support of leftist ideals; their gripping escape from Guangzhou to Hong Kong to Singapore to run from the Communist regime; till modern Singapore where the author is on a journey of discovery of her family's history. Interspersed within the book are historical anecdotes researched by the writer which corroborate with the family's social account. The author has also painstakingly conducted oral interviews with many people encountered by the family, which makes her story-telling sound even more vivid.Along the way, this book highlights the enterprise of the early forefathers in settling down in Malaya, to the patriotic idealism of Overseas Chinese youths who firmly believed in helping to set up a democratic and equal New China in Singapore and Malaya as well as other parts of Southeast Asia, to the kampong spirit of large extended families who stayed together and took care of each other during the developing years of Malaya. I found this book slightly choppy to read in some parts, but overall a very interesting, well-researched and well-written memoir of the author's family history. I would highly recommend this to all Singaporean youths who are interested in hearing about history from the perspective of a local pioneer. I would also recommend this to all those interested in Malayan history.
