Description

Text is bilingual. Over the years, old-timers of the Singapore river have stacked up a lifetime of memories; now, through personal interviews with the Oral History Department, many of their recountings have been recorded for posterity. They were the Hokkien and Teochew towkays, twakowmen, twakow owners, coolies and stevedores – hardy people who worked on the river and made it a vital artery of trade for Singapore. From their experiences, and also through a carefully researched collection of maps, photographs and prints, the conflicts and lifestyle of a bygone era can once again be reenacted and permanently committed to memory.

Published 1986.

Binding of book is loose. Slightly darkened covers with slight foxing and moderate shelfwear. Slight tanning and foxing on edges of book. Stamp on inside of front cover. Very little foxing on certain pages, otherwise in good condition.
