Reluctant Editor: The Singapore Media As Seen Through The Eyes Of A Veteran Newspaper Journalist

Reluctant Editor: The Singapore Media As Seen Through The Eyes Of A Veteran Newspaper Journalist

Inside Singapore journalism’s toughest behind-the-scenes battles

This is a fascinating read if you’re curious about how newsrooms really work when politics, pressure, and principle collide. Balji writes with the authority of someone who was there, so the book feels less like media history and more like being let into private conversations and tense editorial rooms. You come away with a sharper sense of Singapore’s media landscape and the quiet courage it took to hold the line.

Note: While we do our best to ensure the accuracy of cover images, ISBNs may at times be reused for different editions of the same title which may hence appear as a different cover.

Description

These are the unpublished stories behind the headlines you may have read in Singapore newspapers over the years. Above all, they are Singapore media stories experienced firsthand by veteran journalist PN Balji, who was persuaded to become editor of a leading newspaper. Balji spent nearly 40 years in five newsrooms and was part of a hardy generation of editors who wrestled with editorial issues and made tough decisions, sometimes against authority. He also had a ringside view of his colleagues' struggles with the government. In Reluctant Editor, Balji weaves a compelling narrative of how editors of his generation held their ground in challenging times. He brings back the drama, mostly played behind the scenes, and attempts to answer: what made the editors of the 1970s, 80s and 90s act the way they did? It was a life lived dangerously; some lost their jobs, some left the country, and some chose to give in and live to fight another day.
