Description

Published twenty years ago, the original Preschool in Three Cultures was a landmark study of how preschoolers are educated and cared for in China, Japan, and the United States. Lead author Joseph Tobin, with collaborators Yeh Hsueh and Mayumi Karasawa, revisits the work to examine how globalization and social change over the past two decades have influenced early childhood education in these countries. The authors place the subjects’ responses in historical perspective, discuss pressures on schools to evolve and stay the same, and explore patterns of continuity and change in each country. Featuring nearly one hundred stills from videotapes, Preschool in Three Cultures Revisited illustrates the experiences of four-year-olds—and their teachers—on both sides of the Pacific.
