Description

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' Moanin' is a landmark hard bop session recorded October 30, 1958 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass under Blakey's leadership. The music blends bluesy grooves with hard-swinging solos, delivering the famous title track Moanin' along with Are You Real?, Along Came Betty, The Drum Thunder Suite, Blues March, and Come Rain or Come Shine. This 2012 Wax Time reissue preserves the original performances with the same lineup and presents the classic Blue Note session with fidelity that fans of jazz prize. Moanin' stands as a cornerstone of the Jazz Messengers' legacy and a touchstone of late-1950s hard bop.
