Fierce village resilience against history’s cruel machinery

This feels intimate and sweeping at once, following one woman as politics, language, and landscape are ripped away around her. If you like historical fiction that is less about grand battles and more about what oppression does to families and communities, this one really lingers. Readers often come away struck by how quietly devastating it is, and by Trina’s stubborn, human refusal to disappear.

Description

A sweeping historical novel about the struggle of one woman and her village against war, racism and ecological devastation. In a small village in South Tyrol, Trina longs for a different life. She trains to become a teacher, but when she qualifies Mussolini's regime abolishes the use of German as a teaching language. In this climate of fear, Trina works with a clandestine network of schools in the valley, always at risk of capture. Now married and a mother, Trina's life is thrown into further uncertainty when Germany announces the 'Great Choice' and communities in South Tyrol are given the option to move to Germany. The town splits and tensions rise as those who choose not to leave are seen as traitors and spies; they can no longer leave the house without facing abuse. Then one day Trina comes home and finds that her daughter is missing...
