Description

Set a century ago in Boston, Fortune’s Rocks tells the story of fourteen-year-old Olympic Biddeford, who summers with her parents at their seasonal house at Fortune’s Rocks. Her father, a publisher of mildly liberal literature, invites an author who is also a physician—forty, married with four children—to visit. The affair blossoms during a sunlit summer, and is exposed at Olympic’s fifteenth birthday party. Olympic is sent back to Boston, and nine months later she bears a son whose father is the visiting author; the child is taken from her. She spends years in exile at a ladies’ college and then as a governess, determined to recover her child, which leads her back to Fortune’s Rocks. The novel explores awakening, desire, and the consequences of social mores.
