Gianlorenzo Bernini was the greatest sculptor and one of the greatest architects of the seventeenth century. Bernini served Louis XIV as well as a succession of popes. His work expresses the spirit of his age perhaps more than that of any other artist in history. In this new study Howard Hibbard reveals the gradual evolution of a revolutionary artistic vision which embraced painting, sculpture, and architecture and ultimately merged them into one dramatic whole.
