Description

Professor Copleston first examines the philosophic situation in which Schopenhauer conceived his world-view. Then, after a precise survey of Schopenhauer's life and his peculiar combination of classicism and romanticism, he presents in sequence the main notions of the philosopher of pessimism: from life as dream and tragedy, through the 'escape routes' of aesthetic contemplation and denial of the will, to the Schopenhauerian concepts of morality and freedom, virtue and holiness, and finally salvation in recognising that ‘if the existent is evil, it follows that value must be sought in a tending away from the existent. Thus the supreme value will be - paradoxically enough - nothingness.'
