H. Hatterr is an engagingly shrewd-naïve Anglo-Indian seeking wisdom from the seven sages of India. It proves a punishing process: he is robbed and hit by pukka muggers, falls foul of dubious swamis, falls for frustrating Rosie of the riding breeches (‘carnal to the core’) and experiences much else that wouldn't normally 'bear talking about in one's autobiographical'. Despite this onslaught of setbacks, Hatterr's appetite for lessons from life remains unquenchable. So do his sparkling torrents of words.
