Description

This Dictionary is intended to serve three objects. The greater part of it consists of short biographies of more than 700 painters, sculptors, and engravers, which aim to give the essential facts and dates of an artist's career, a short selection of European and American museums where his work may be seen, and attempt to summarize the essence of his style. This usually involves cross-references to other artists or to movements (such as Impressionism or Cubism) or to ideas and styles (e.g. Renaissance, Neo-Classicism) whose fuller definition is a further object of the book. The third purpose is to provide, in articles ranging from a dozen to over a thousand words, definitions and descriptions of technical terms and processes (impasto, fresco, engraving, etc.). The Dictionary covers the last seven centuries, up to Picasso and Tachisme, but does not deal with the art of Eastern or primitive peoples.

Binding of book is loose and slightly fragile. Slightly darkened covers with moderate shelfwear, creasing and cracking. Moderate tanning and foxing on edges of book. Moderate foxing on insides of covers. Annotations in pen and moderate foxing on certain pages.
