`Wars have often determined the character of society. Society in exchange has determined the character of wars. This is the theme of Michael Howard's stimulating book. It is written with all his usual skill and in its small compass is perhaps the most original book he has written. Though he surveys a thousand years of history, he does so without sinking in a slough of facts and draws a broad outline of developments which will delight the general reader.' A. J. P. Some kisses come at a price.War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it with untrustworthy new allies and the empire as his enemy. Though he has convinced himself that he no longer loves Kestrel, Arin hasn’t forgotten her, or how she became exactly the kind of person he has always despised. She cared more for the empire than she did for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she did for him.At least, that’s what he thinks. In the frozen north, Kestrel is a prisoner in a brutal work camp. As she searches desperately for a way to escape, she wishes Arin could know what she sacrificed for him. She wishes she could make the empire pay for what they’ve done to her.But no one gets what they want just by wishing. As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover that the world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and they are caught in between. With so much to lose, can anybody really win?

With The Verdict of Peace Correlli Barnett brings to a majestic finale his acclaimed Pride and Fall quartet, tracing Britain's decline from world power to victim of the 'British disease'.Challengingly original in concept, The Verdict of Peace describes how, between the outbreak of the Korean war in 1950 and the Suez debacle in 1956, Britain threw away her last opportunity to reinvent herself as an industrial nation state before old rivals such as Germany and Japan finally recovered from wartime defeat. It describes how Britain still suffered, ten years after the Second World War, from old-fashioned industries, hidebound management, trade union blocking of technical change and self-destructive strikes. It analyses Britain's ominous failure to win market domination in new technologies such as aeronautics, business systems and computers.

Sasha turns her back on her regal heritage, forsakes the life she could have as the princess in a rich kingdom, and trains instead to be a powerful warrior, fighting for the good of the people her father commands. Sasha is a princess, the like of which the highland country of Lenayin has never seen before. Spurning her royal heritage to be raised by the great warrior, Kessligh, her exquisite swordplay astonishes all who witness it. But Sasha is still young, untested in battle and often led by her rash temper. In the complex world of Lenayin loyalties, her defiant wilfulness is attracting the wrong kind of attention. Lenayin is a land almost divided by its two faiths: the Verenthane of the ruling classes and the pagan Goeren-yai, amongst whom Sasha now lives. The Goeren-yai worship swordplay and honour and begin to see Sasha as the great spirit—the Synnich—who will unite them. But Sasha is still searching for what she believes and must choose her side carefully. When the Udalyn people—the symbol of Goeren-yai pride and courage—are attacked, Sasha will face her moment of testing. How will she act? Is she ready to lead? Can she be the saviour they need her to be?

Peter Hennessy's sensational book draws on recently declassified intelligence and war-planning documents, and interviews with key officials, to reveal a chilling behind-the-scenes picture of the corridors of power when the world teetered on the brink of disaster. Who would have gone underground with the Prime Minister in the event of an attack? Where is their secret bunker? Under what circumstances would we retaliate? Where were the Soviets' UK targets thought to be? Whose finger was -- and is -- on the button? And what kind of world would have been left when the dust had settled and 'breakdown' had occurred ...?

The farmers of Paradise County have been leading a hardscrabble life
unchanged for generations. The Communist government has encouraged them to
plant garlic, but selling the crop is not as simple as they believed.
Warehouses fill up, taxes skyrocket, and government officials maltreat even
those who have traveled for days to sell their harvest. A surplus on the
garlic market ensues, and the farmers must watch in horror as their crops
wither and rot in the fields. Families are destroyed by the random
imprisonment of young and old for supposed crimes against the state. The
prisoners languish in horrifying conditions in their cells, with only their
strength of character and thoughts of their loved ones to save them from
madness. Meanwhile, a blind minstrel incites the masses to take the law
into their own hands, and a riot of apocalyptic proportions follows with
savage and unforgettable consequences. The Garlic Ballads is a powerful
vision of life under the heel of an inflexible and uncaring government. It
is also a delicate story of love between man and woman, father and child,
friend and friend—and the struggle to maintain that love despite
overwhelming obstacles.

"Few analysts of U.S. involvement in Vietnam would agree with the provocative conclusion of this book. The thesis of most postmortems is that the United States lost the war because of the failure of its foreign policy decisionmaking system. According to Gelb and Betts, however, the foreign policy failed, but the decisionmaking system worked. They attribute this paradox to the efficiency of the system in sustaining an increasingly heavy commitment based on the shared conviction of six administrations that the United States must prevent the loss of Vietnam to communism. However questionable the conviction, and thus the commitment, may have been, the authors stress that the latter ""was made and kept for twenty-five years. That is what the system—the shared values, the political and bureaucratic pressures—was designed to do, and it did it."" The comprehensive analysis that supports this contention reflects the widest use thus fare of available sources, including recently declassified portions of negotiations documents and files in presidential libraries. The frequently quoted statement of the principals themselves contradict the commonly held view that U.S. leaders were unaware of the consequences of their decisions and deluded by false expectations of easy victory. With few exceptions, the record reveals that these leaders were both realistic and pessimistic about the chances for success in Vietnam. Whey they persisted nonetheless is explained in this thorough account of their decisionmaking from 1946 to 1968, and how their mistakes might be avoided by policymakers in the future is considered in the final chapter."

Everybody’s Gulf War Syndrome is a little bit different. Or so believes Larry, who returns home from Desert Storm to find his hair gone and his bones rapidly disintegrating. Then there’s Lance Corporal James Laverne of the US Marines, who grows a third ear in Kuwait. And in the audaciously comic novella “Notes from a Bunker Along Highway 8,” a Green Beret deserts his team after seeing a vision of George Washington, only to find a new calling—administering aid to wounded Iraqi civilians; he’s hindered only by the furtive nature of his mission and an unruly band of chimpanzees. Together these narratives form a bracing amalgamation of devastating humor and brilliant cultural observation, in which Gabe Hudson fearlessly explores the darker implications of American military power.

Recommendation: This book is a great read for those interested in the life of Ho Chi Minh, who was key in the revolution and reunification of Vietnam. The author covers Minh's life from his impoverished youth to his time in the US, France and the Soviet Union. The most outstanding feature of the book is its vivid description of the struggles of the Vietnamese, and the author's ability to bring the story to life.

Berlin, January   1945The war draws to a close, but the fight for a vanquished city --and for history-- is just beginning. On the heels of the critically  acclaimed War of the Rats , the new master of historical suspense, David L. Robbins, turns his compelling vision on the waning months of World War II, when world leaders  engage in a dicey  game of cat  and mouse  to ultimately determine the fate of the second half of the twentieth century. The End of WarIn the final months of the war in Europe, the last act of a five-year conflagration is  about to be played out.  Allied generals  move their war-hardened  armies  around the mortally wounded Nazi military machine.  But strategies  are being  formed on a greater scale  than even generals  can  imagine. While Churchill  fumes helplessly, Roosevelt  makes  crucial decisions  that will cede  Berlin to Stalin and the Russians. The stakes are no less critical for ordinary men and women, fighting to live another  day. On the ground  are young  Russian soldiers driven by vengeance  into the teeth of the still-deadly Nazi army;  American  forces push forward under  the  political  motives of a canny commander- in- chief; and the British, aloof, at odds with their Yankee  counterparts, see in these last fateful moves  a devastating  betrayal by Washington and Moscow. The End of War vividly animates the giants who shaped history and breathes life into the heartbreaking struggles of those who merely lived it. From the chaos of the trenches  on the eastern front, to the desperation   of a single  Jewish man  hidden in a Berlin basement by a terrified mother and daughter,  to the burning  ambition of an American photojournalist  determined  to  capture  on film the defining moment  of the war, Robbins ushers us into the sweep of history  and  the  drama  of the  human  face of war.An epic  novel exploding  with the urgency  of battle  and  history in the  making,  here  is The End of War.From the Hardcover edition.
