Berlin, January   1945The war draws to a close, but the fight for a vanquished city --and for history-- is just beginning. On the heels of the critically  acclaimed War of the Rats , the new master of historical suspense, David L. Robbins, turns his compelling vision on the waning months of World War II, when world leaders  engage in a dicey  game of cat  and mouse  to ultimately determine the fate of the second half of the twentieth century. The End of WarIn the final months of the war in Europe, the last act of a five-year conflagration is  about to be played out.  Allied generals  move their war-hardened  armies  around the mortally wounded Nazi military machine.  But strategies  are being  formed on a greater scale  than even generals  can  imagine. While Churchill  fumes helplessly, Roosevelt  makes  crucial decisions  that will cede  Berlin to Stalin and the Russians. The stakes are no less critical for ordinary men and women, fighting to live another  day. On the ground  are young  Russian soldiers driven by vengeance  into the teeth of the still-deadly Nazi army;  American  forces push forward under  the  political  motives of a canny commander- in- chief; and the British, aloof, at odds with their Yankee  counterparts, see in these last fateful moves  a devastating  betrayal by Washington and Moscow. The End of War vividly animates the giants who shaped history and breathes life into the heartbreaking struggles of those who merely lived it. From the chaos of the trenches  on the eastern front, to the desperation   of a single  Jewish man  hidden in a Berlin basement by a terrified mother and daughter,  to the burning  ambition of an American photojournalist  determined  to  capture  on film the defining moment  of the war, Robbins ushers us into the sweep of history  and  the  drama  of the  human  face of war.An epic  novel exploding  with the urgency  of battle  and  history in the  making,  here  is The End of War.From the Hardcover edition.
A Genius for War : The German Army and General Staff, 1807-1945 - Thryft
Sold out

RM24.00 MYR

It is often agreed that militarism, the aggressive policy of arming nations, was a chief cause of the wars of the twentieth century between forces loyal to Germany and those loyal to Britain. In a very comprehensive study across 150 years, Colonel T. N. Dupuy uses his experience in the US Army to explain the manoeuvrings and characters behind German warfare in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is the General Staff who influence the performance of the Army, institutionalising military excellence in direct and indirect ways. Colonel Dupuy begins with the Prussian generals of the 1800s including Frederick the Great, and then tells of the alliance between Prussia and Germany in the aftermath of the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War. Colonel Dupuy goes on to write excellently about the two generals named Moltke, uncle and nephew, who steered the German army from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries. He extols the military virtues of the man whose idea it was to invade France by using the neutrality of Belgium, von Schlieffen, whose plan seemed so brilliant before Britain saw through it during World War I. Following the Treaty of Versailles, which led to the resignations of Groener and the ascendancy of Hindenburg to President, Germany was saved from dissolution and civil war by the brilliant Seeckt. The rise of the National Socialist party, headed by the charismatic Adolf Hitler, made rearmament a pillar of their policies. The story ends with the offensives of World War II and the lessons historians and military strategists can learn from them. This book is a detailed study of the goings-on in the committee rooms and at the frontline of the nation which had in modern times a genius for war. Praise for Trevor Dupuy: “Superb...enthralling...highly recommended.” — Library Journal “Concise, well-written...a wide selection of paintings and photographs and excellent maps...aid in understanding the complexities of strategy and following the action.” — The New York Times Colonel T. N. Dupuy (1916-1995) commanded American forces during World War II, serving in Burma and China, before becoming a professor and military historian at Harvard University and then on to Ohio State University. Together with his father, he wrote the textbook Military Heritage of America which has for half a century been used widely as a teaching aid. His other books include Brave Men and Great Captains and a series of Military Lives which focussed on great war leaders from Alexander the Great to Winston Churchill. He pioneered the Quantified Judgment Method of Analysis to use the lessons of past combat for today, established the Dupuy Institute for that very purpose, and often appeared on television as a pundit, giving his opinion on contemporary combats. The Good Man of Nanking : The Diaries of John Rabe - Thryft

In November 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army took Nanking (Nanjing), the capital of China and home to 1.3 million people, and began an orgy of murder, rape, and looting. By the time discipline was restored two months later, hundreds of thousands of Chinese were dead, with hundreds of thousands more homeless, starving, and traumatized. The Rape of Nanking, as it is commonly known, still causes international controversy, as Japanese politicians refuse to apologize unequivocally to China and school textbooks continue to misrepresent the events. Like Oskar Schindler of Schindler's List , John Rabe was an enterprising and fundamentally decent German businessman caught up in war. Head of the Nanjing branch of Siemens, the German electronics firm, he had lived and worked in China for almost 30 years. Rather than flee from the threatened city, he stayed to organize a safety zone as refuge of last resort for Chinese civilians. The Good Man of Nanking is his firsthand description of the terrible events and his ultimate success in saving perhaps a quarter of a million lives. The diary format provides a forum for the extraordinary power and immediacy of John Rabe's words, including his gallows humor, placing the reader there in Nanking as the bombs explode and the Japanese soldiers begin their massacres. Rabe's trials were not over when he returned to wartime Germany; diary entries that he wrote during the occupation of Berlin by the Soviet army form a fascinating coda to this book. --John Stevenson
