Description

Hellenika covers the years between 411 and 362 BCE, a dramatic period in which the alliances among Athens, Sparta, Thebes, and Persia were in constant flux. Along with the works of Herodotus and Thucydides, it completes an ancient narrative of the military and political history of classical Greece. Xenophon was an Athenian who participated in Cyrus the Younger’s expedition against Artaxerxes II of Persia. Later Xenophon joined the Spartan army and was exiled from Athens. In addition to the Hellenika, some of his essays survive, including reminiscences of his teacher Socrates. This edition presents a modern, accessible translation, with a scholarly introduction, extensive appendices, and a detailed timeline to illuminate this complex period. It also includes related texts with explanatory notes and a table correlating passages across works to aid assessment of Xenophon’s reliability as a historian. The Landmark edition remains one of the most readable and comprehensive editions of this essential history.
