Aquinas (1224/5-1274) lived at a time when the Christian West had recently become acquainted with a wealth of Greek and Islamic philosophical analysis and speculation. He is remarkable for the way in which he used and developed the legacy of ancient thought, which made his contemporaries regard him as an advanced thinker.
