The city is a place laced with the material and the immaterial, the visible and invisible. There are the migratory lines trod by our ancestors, the scent of our foodways, the flight of birds, the sigh of an old school, a demolished rooftop, an unassuming lamppost, fading tongues, empty chairs, extroverted harbours. These are the indelible marks that layer our city, that make up where we are, and who we are. Drawing together her memories growing up in Singapore and lyrical observations of the nation’s ever-changing landscape, Yi Wei creates an evocative portrait of the city and what it means to her. Beautifully rendered and delicately written, Indelible City brings you on an intimate sojourn with Yi Wei as she explores issues of home, identity and place. “The city, under the magic of Yi Wei's creative non-fiction, is a living thing tinged with loss, nostalgia and wonder.” - Yong Shu Hoong, poet and editor of essays, Quarterly Literary Review Singapore “Yi Wei's debut guides with a gentle hand through a mnemonic city, her mnemonic city, signposted by fiction, fact and fancy.” - Loh Guan Liang, author of Bitter Punch and Transparent Strangers

It was a time when children spent the hours after school playing capteh and marbles, eating fresh jambu, hauling pails of water home from the public standpipe, attending prayers at the surau, learning to fast, reading the Quran, as well as enjoying evenings in the open-air cinema. Despite the poverty, he thrived in the twilight years of the kampung and managed to make his dreams soar like a kite, fulfilling the aspirations of his single mother for a better life in a modernising city. Today I am 22 years of age. I used to be a person who was working in the complex streets of Geylang and the black market. I was a gangster in three different criminal organizations. Robbery, assault, peddling drugs, extortion...At the end of everything I have done in the underworld, I have never brought goodness to anyone around me. People who know me and those who don t, I have never given them something pleasant to smile about. As a child, Joshua Foo seemed to have a particular affinity for trouble. Despite his best intentions, his actions and decisions always seemed to land him on the wrong side of the law. Without the support of a loving family, Joshua was drifting and furthermore, angry and he didn t know why. With his father in jail and his mother working tirelessly to provide for her only child, Joshua was left to his own to make sense of his world and fend for himself. The death of his beloved grandmother and constant teasing by peers over the absence of his father drove him to fill the void in his world with friends who gave him the support he never had, the security he never knew and worth he never felt. But this came with a price, and with eyes wide open, Joshua fell headlong into a secret, illegal world, where bravery and loyalty were valued above all. But eventually Joshua had to come face to face with the reality of his world and into confrontation with all that he had been running from. With piercing honesty and brazen boldness of youth, Joshua recounts his experiences of being in a gang, his brushes with law and examines the events that brought him there. What made him who he is today? Was it his own choices, or the choices of others? And does he have the agency to decide what he will become? More than just a shocking story of a boy losing his way, The Right Mistakes is about a boy trying to make sense of his life and change it for the better.

These are the unpublished stories about the stories that you may have read in Singapore newspapers over the years. Above all, they are Singapore media stories as experienced first-hand by a veteran journalist who had to be persuaded to become Editor of a leading newspaper. PN Balji was an active participant in mainstream journalism, having spent nearly 40 years working in five newsrooms. He was part of a hardy generation of newspaper editors who wrestled with editorial issues and made tough decisions, sometimes against the will of authority. He also had a ringside view of his colleagues' tussles and confrontations with the government. In Reluctant Editor, Balji weaves a compelling narrative, with anecdotes, of an alternative story of how some editors of his generation managed to hold the ground in challenging times. He brings back the drama, mostly played behind the scenes, and attempts to answer the question: What made the editors of the 1970s, 80s and 90s act the way they did? It was a life lived dangerously; some lost their jobs, some had to leave the country and some decided to give in and lived to fight another day.
