Description

An ethnographic account of the daily lives and health challenges of Mexican migrant farmworkers in the United States. Based on five years of fieldwork—including berry-picking and traveling with migrants from Oaxaca to West Coast work sites—the book examines how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism shape health and access to care. The narrative describes experiences such as accompanying migrants across the desert border into Arizona and interactions with Border Patrol, as well as time living with Indigenous families in Oaxaca and in U.S. farm labor camps. It follows planting and harvesting corn, picking strawberries, accompanying sick workers to clinics and hospitals, participating in healing rituals, and mourning the deaths of friends. The result is a thick description of the workers’ struggles, resilience, and everyday negotiation of health.
