- Heavyweight black vinyl LP in a high-gloss sleeve with a cardstock insert. Issued in a resealable poly bag (not shrink-wrapped).

- Pressing note: The LP appears fine, but the pressing is flawed such that the needle tends to skip repeatedly during play, even when anti-skating is adjusted, especially on track A5.

- Gearbox Records statement (April 12, 2021): "After carrying out tests last week, we have decided to push back the vinyl release date of Graham Costello's Second Lives album. Due to a combination of factors the pressing is not up to usual standard especially on low-compliance cartridge turntables."

- Subsequent announcements indicated a corrected vinyl edition would be released "in the summer." Nevertheless, an unknown number of flawed copies were shipped to preorder customers in late March 2021, well in advance of the album's previously scheduled May 7 release date.

- Track A1 title appears as "အစ" on the sleeve, but as "အစ ('a ca)" on the center label.

- Release credits state "cut by Caspar Sutton-Jones," but the side B runout includes "DAZ" etching, indicating a Darrel Sheinman cut.

- Graham Costello liner notes: "...this is a fully analogue record - a computer hasn't touched it. You hear full takes and practically zero overdubs."

- Selected insert text:
- Recorded and mixed directly to analogue tape. Mastered using Decca valve equalisation and Telefunken U73b compression and limiting. Cut on a Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex RA1700 series amps, Westrex 3DIIA cutting head.
- Fergus McCreadie appears courtesy of Edition Records.
- Graham Costello plays Bosphorus Cymbals.
- ℗ & © 2021 Gearbox Records Ltd.

Description

Second Lives is Graham Costello's STRATA's sophomore album, blending Reichian minimalism with semi-free jazz, intricate polyrhythms and cinematic ambience. Recorded largely to tape with co-producer Hugh Padgham, the six-piece STRATA delivers hypnotic grooves that explore identity, heritage and resilience. Released in 2021 on Gearbox Records, the record earned praise from Jazzwise as one of the year's best jazz albums. The lineup features Graham Costello on drums alongside Fergus McCreadie, Joe Williamson, Liam Shortall, Mark Hendry and Harry Weir.
