Description
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk captures a 1957 studio session in which Thelonious Monk sits in with Blakey's band, performing Monk's own compositions such as Evidence, In Walked Bud, Blue Monk, I Mean You, Rhythm-A-Ning, and Purple Shades. The personnel on the date includes Art Blakey on drums, Monk on piano, with Johnny Griffin on tenor sax, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass. Originally released by Atlantic Records in 1958, the album stands as a landmark hard bop collaboration. The 65th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, issued in 2022, remasters the sessions from the original tapes in mono and adds a second disc of previously unreleased outtakes with a 12-page booklet.
