Wild : A Journey from Lost to Found

from RM17.85 MYR

Unit price
per

At twenty-six, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's rapid death from cancer, her family disbanded and her marriage crumbled. With nothing to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to walk eleven-hundred miles of the west coast of America - from the Mojave Desert, through California and Oregon, and into Washington state - and to do it alone. She had no experience of long-distance hiking and the journey was nothing more than a line on a map. But it held a promise - a promise of piecing together a life that lay in ruins at her feet.Strayed's account captures the agonies - both mental and physical - of her incredible journey; how it maddened and terrified her, and how, ultimately, it healed her. Wild is a brutal memoir of survival, grief and redemption: a searing portrayal of life at its lowest ebb and at its highest tide.

Adventures in the Anthropocene : A Journey to the Heart of the Planet We Made

from RM63.88 MYR

Unit price

We all know our planet is in crisis, and that it is largely our fault. But all too often the full picture of change is obstructed by dense data sets and particular catastrophes. Struggling with this obscurity in her role as an editor at Nature, Gaia Vince decided to travel the world and see for herself what life is really like for people on the frontline of this new reality. What she found was a number people doing the most extraordinary things.During her journey she finds a man who is making artificial glaciers in Nepal along with an individual who is painting mountains white to attract snowfall; take the electrified reefs of the Maldives; or the man who's making islands out of rubbish in the Caribbean. These are ordinary people who are solving severe crises in crazy, ingenious, effective ways. While Vince does not mince words regarding the challenging position our species is in, these wonderful stories, combined with the new science that underpins Gaia's expertise and research, make for a persuasive, illuminating — and strangely hopeful — read on what the Anthropocene means for our future.

Pacific : The Ocean of the Future

from RM14.19 MYR

Unit price
per

Bestselling author Simon Winchester offers an enthralling biography of the Pacific Ocean and its role in the modern world, exploring our relationship with this imposing force of nature. As the Mediterranean shaped the classical world, and the Atlantic connected Europe to the New World, the Pacific Ocean defines our tomorrow. With China on the rise, so, too, are the American cities of the West coast, including Seattle, San Francisco, and the long cluster of towns down the Silicon Valley.Today, the Pacific is ascendant. Its geological history has long transformed us—tremendous earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis—but its human history, from a Western perspective, is quite young, beginning with Magellan’s sixteenth-century circumnavigation. It is a natural wonder whose most fascinating history is currently being made.In telling the story of the Pacific, Simon Winchester takes us from the Bering Strait to Cape Horn, the Yangtze River to the Panama Canal, and to the many small islands and archipelagos that lie in between. He observes the fall of a dictator in Manila, visits aboriginals in northern Queensland, and is jailed in Tierra del Fuego, the land at the end of the world. His journey encompasses a trip down the Alaska Highway, a stop at the isolated Pitcairn Islands, a trek across South Korea and a glimpse of its mysterious northern neighbor.Winchester’s personal experience is vast and his storytelling second to none. And his historical understanding of the region is formidable, making Pacific a paean to this magnificent sea of beauty, myth, and imagination that is transforming our lives.

On Trails : An Exploration

from RM35.46 MYR

Unit price
per

A strikingly original debut from a tremendous new talent, Rob Moor explores the nature of trails, from hiking the Appalachian trail to the biological phenomenon of how the trails of ants are formed. In the vein of Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlust: A History of Walking, this book will explore the small and particular, tracing the formation of trails from the most tiny―ants, termites, tent caterpillars; neural pathways, minute fossil trails―to the vastest and most diffuse, including the International Appalachian Trail, what will be the world’s longest footpath, spanning from Alabama to Morocco. Introducing readers to a range of fascinating characters: from a French entomologist named Audrey Dussutour. who studies how ants are capable of externalizing memory, (allowing very simple creatures to make very smart decisions); to an old man in Vermont named Larry Benoit, who has been called America’s best deer hunter, to a renowned trail builder in Tennessee who fashions trails using a motorized dirt bike.As Rob re-evaluates what we think of as simple and ordinary, he is also wedding two popular genres of nonfiction: the long distance hiking memoir (Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods) with the essayistic nature writing (like that of John McPhee).Moor is that he is a great nature writer, but also a mind-bending thinker: “What entrances me about trails―what so many nature writers overlook―is that they are more than physical phenomena; a trail is a model of elegance and a lesson in cooperation. They also provide a conceptual lens that, once goggled to your eye, alters all you survey. You begin to see even the plainest things as linear, ever-optimizing, self-perpetuating.” This deep search for meaning introduces readers to experts who work with trails of all kind, outrageous hiking anecdotes and spectacular descriptions of landscapes and animal behavior. Moor’s book gives an eye-opening tour, leaving us with a much richer, prismatic take on what we constantly take for granted: how we get where we’re going.

The Annotated Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace

Wallace's 'Malay Archipelago' is a classic account of the travels of a Victorian naturalist through island Southeast Asia. It has been loved by readers ever since its publication in 1869. Despite numerous modern reprints with appreciative introductions, this is the first - and long overdue - annotated edition in English. This edition explains, updates and corrects the original text with an historical introduction, and hundreds of explanatory notes. Wallace left hundreds of people, places, publications and species unidentified. He referred to most species only with the scientific name current at the time. Whenever available, the common name for species have been provided, and scientific names updated. The 52 illustrations from the original edition are supplemented by 16 pages of newly-selected colour illustrations dating from the period. The content of the 'Malay Archipelago' has never been thoroughly analysed and compared against other contemporary sources. It turns out that the book contains many errors. This includes not just incorrect dates and place names but some of the most remarkable anecdotes; for example, the dramatic claim that tigers "kill on an average a Chinaman every day" in Singapore or that a Dutch Governor General committed suicide by leaping from a waterfall on Celebes.By correcting the text of the 'Malay Archipelago' against Wallace's letters and notebooks and other contemporary sources and by enriching it with modern identifications, this edition reveals Wallace's work as never before.
