Quiet epiphanies in a city of longing

This is a brilliant pick if you like classics that feel emotionally sharp rather than distant. Joyce turns ordinary moments into revelations, capturing loneliness, desire, pride and regret with an honesty that still feels startling. It is the kind of book readers admire for how deeply it understands people, and The Dead alone leaves many feeling quietly haunted.

Description

Dubliners was first published in 1914. The book depicts middle-class Catholic life in Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century. The collection explores themes of childhood disappointment, adolescence, and awakening. Joyce was in his early thirties when he wrote these stories, among which 'The Dead' is probably the most famous. Considered at the time as a literary experiment, the collection presents moments of joy, fear, grief, love and loss that together form one of the most complete depictions of a city ever committed to the page. With an afterword by Peter Harness. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautifully bound gift editions of much-loved classic titles. Bound in real cloth, printed on high-quality paper, and featuring ribbon markers and gilt edges, Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.
