Timeless tales exploring life's profoundest themes.

If you've ever felt daunted by Tolstoy's larger works, these stories serve as an accessible entry point into his literary world. They encapsulate his preoccupation with life's depth, mortality, and moral complexities in bite-sized, equally powerful narratives. Diving into these, you'll not only get a taste of Tolstoy's genius but also encounter stories that echo with relevance, even to a modern reader.

Description

The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories is a collection in which Tolstoy probes mortality, meaning, and moral consequence through seven powerful tales. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with introductions by Anthony Briggs, David McDuff and Ronald Wilks. The stories are: 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich', 'Polikushka', 'Three Deaths', 'The Forged Coupon', 'After the Ball', 'The Wood-Felling', and 'The Raid'. They trace Tolstoy's preoccupation with death from a devasting confrontation with dying to the brutality of military life, and include vivid depictions of peasants, aristocrats, and soldiers. The edition includes an introduction, a chronology, notes, and suggestions for further reading. Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was born at Yasnaya Polyana in central Russia and wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina; his later moral and spiritual concerns shaped his writing. If you enjoyed The Death of Ivan Ilyich, you might also like Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, also available in Penguin Classics.
