💌 #3: It's a sizing crisis! 😱

...why am I an M in Uniqlo & an XS in Mango?!

Hey there,

Isn’t it frustrating, y’all, to find when you’re shopping for clothes that you could be of different sizes across different brands, at any one time?!?

This is what Leah Harper in The Guardian terms the “sizing crisis”, when, as Time ironically points out, in fact “one size fits none”. This is partly a consequence of marketing (brands sizing clothes to suit their target customers) and of vanity sizing (labelling clothes with sizes smaller than their actual cut). However, to introduce universal sizing isn’t necessarily the solution either, for as Shingo Tsukamoto explains in the Guardian article, “there are complexities of cultural and regional variations in body types and preferences” to navigate.

🌰 TL;DR 🌰

Me figuring out what size I am in different brands:

But now you can shop by Thryft Size!

Previously, we relied on brand sizes to sort the clothes in our store. However, as mentioned above, we quickly realised that because they can vary so drastically, it wasn't very useful and could be confusing to shop our store by size.

So recently, we started using an algorithm that matches measurements we take to a standardised sizing chart we drew up for our store. We call this... Thryft Size! 🎉

This chart, in Our Process, is linked from Thrift Clothes and at our website footer.

Also it’s a pop up on each product page, for easy reference as you browse!

You can now shop by Thryft Size!

Of course, each item is also given exact measurements, so you know what you’re getting! We've also illustrated how we measure each items, with diagrams 📏

Our "How We Measure" diagrams for Dresses and Shorts! You can find these for different types of clothing under our sizing chart.

At the same time, we’ve kept the original brand sizes of items! Some further improvements we're thinking of making include a conversion chart that matches Thryft Size to EU and UK sizes for women, so if it’s a brand or a size you’re familiar with, you need not always hunt for a measuring tape to see if it will fit on you.

We know thrifting for clothes online isn't as seamless as thrifting in person, but we hope this new feature will help make thrifting with us easier, and that you will be able to find some unique gems for your wardrobe

Write us!

If you’ve got feedback for us on how we could improve your online clothes thrifting experience!

Otherwise, check out your Thryft Size, and get shopping!

Sincerely,

Thryft
