...so we're trying something new...
Hey there,
From 2023 till January this year, we’d organised Weekend Gardens and opened several pop-up stores, across the year at Bukit Timah, within The Social Space at Duo Galleria and, most recently, in Peace Centre. At these events and stores, we’d met and made friends with many of you 💚
Since returning to our online store in February, we’ve found ourselves missing seeing you around! It’s a sense of connection that we recognise isn’t as present in our communications online. Our emails, designed as announcements, inevitably come across as impersonal. And while we do think these emails are useful in featuring products from our (massive!) inventory, in starting this new series, we’re hoping to share more of ourselves with you and to open a channel through which we can correspond candidly!
It’s really only the five or six of us here at Thryft; we’re a small team (with big dreams!) who since Thryft started, have been learning and growing, and we’d sincerely like you to join us on our journey.
🌰 TL;DR 🌰 Nobody: Thryft: WE MISS YOU CAN WE TALK TO YOU THIS IS OUR LIFE STORY

What's happened so far: Getting into Thryft Vintage!
Since closing Second Story: Peace Edition, we’ve set up Vintage and Rare Books in its own section in our online store (among other things, which we'll share more about in weeks to come 😉)! These are books published before 1975, and rare and special editions of books to collect.
While we'd used to stock and sell them online, it’d only been at our dedicated unit in Second Story that we’d seen a robust curiosity for these books. As a category, they aren’t as accessible here in Singapore, and so in this regard, they may appear mysterious, as objects of intrigue one might perhaps find intimidating.
As at Second Story, we intend to maintain in our selection for Thryft Vintage different tiers for different readers and buyers. Quite frequently, Pelicans and Peregrines in our store cost less than SGD$30 / piece; you could look these through, for specific areas of interest (we do often find titles on philosophy that we know many of you enjoy, that don’t often show up in our regular store). Or, as a casual or serious collector, you could look, say, for editions of books dear to you to add to your library.
As readers and buyers of books ourselves, we know it’s impossible to replicate online the experience of browsing in person…! There is, after all, a certain weight to holding history in one’s hands… and a certain sweetness of smell, of the age of knowledge we can’t reproduce online, sadly.
Therefore it is all the more crucial to us, that we make sure our listings reflect books in our store accurately, true to reality. So we've taken care to photograph them as they are, and to pay attention to important aspects, of each book's anatomy!
The photography set up in our office! Using planks of wood and a lamp we recycled from Second Story: Peace Edition 🤭
In addition to photographing the covers, of our books, we photograph sample pages as well.
When listing, we adhere to a standard process, where we first scrutinise each book’s binding, covers and edges, to determine its extent of wear and tear.
Here’s part of a Glossary we use, in descriptions of the conditions of our books 🤓
Each book, as it appears in our online store. Hopefully, our process of care is reflected in our listings!🤞
Write us!
If you’re a collector and/or an expert and you’ve got advice to share with us, we’d love to (and we'd be humbled to) hear from you 💓 If you like this new series, let us know too!
Otherwise, browse Vintage and Rare Books in our online store here, and/or follow us at @thryft_vintage on IG 😗
Sincerely,
Thryft
