Description
Sudhir Venkatesh, the young sociologist who became famous in "Freakonomics" for his study on drug dealers, describes his time living with the gangs on the Southside of Chicago. In the Robert Taylor Homes projects on Chicago's South Side, Sudhir befriends J.T., a gang leader for the Black Kings. As he gains J.T.'s trust, he is made leader of the gang to prove his CEO-like qualities. Venkatesh explores the dynamics of the gang, including why J.T. encourages his henchmen to stay in school, the difference between a 'regular' hustler and a 'hype', and the challenges faced when the FBI starts cracking down on the Black Kings.
