Ernest Goh’s close encounters with these creatures of the slimy-scaly kind began in the longkangs around the Siglap kampong where he spent much of his early childhood. Armed with nothing but empty milk tins and his bare hands, he scooped up whatever went past — tadpoles, guppies and the occasional frog.Prized possessions they were then. Today, fish continue to fascinate millions of hobbyists worldwide, turning Singapore into the world’s ornamental fish capital. (The island accounts for 24 per cent of world export and over 40 per cent of the Asian market.)In this book, 38 varieties of fish and aquarium creatures that have charmed enthusiasts all over the globe — including the Red Bubble Eye, Shovelnose Catfish and Albino Clawed Frog — are shown in colourful, close-up glory. Surprising, whimsical and always fascinating, The Fish Book is master photographer Ernest Goh’s first book. It is also his homage to the humble longkang fish for ensuring his childhood world went beyond late-afternoon cartoons and school textbooks.

Pa (Father was what one called the priest) was in the force and, together with Ma, Eric, and Beryl, her life revolved around Sunday Masses, school, hockey, Christmases, weddings and family gatherings, where one danced, flirted with the boys or simply hung around the bar reminiscing the good old days. But the cold winds of change were blowing. Political violence and racial riots spilled onto the streets threatening to end forever the peaceful lifestyle of a fragile community. Against this backdrop of fear and uncertainty, Bertha is dragged into a deadly game of terrorism and espionage. Only she can prevent the impending bloodshed of war. Meet an over-the-hill Pop Yé-yé singer with a faulty heart, two conservative middle-aged women holding hands in the Galápagos, and the proprietor of a Laundromat with a penchant for Cantonese songs of heartbreak. Rehash national icons: the truth about racial riot fodder-girl Maria Hertogh living out her days as a chambermaid in Lake Tahoe, a mirage of the Merlion as a ladyboy working Orchard Towers, and a high-stakes fantasy starring the still-suave lead of the 1990s TV hit serial The Unbeatables.Heartfelt and sexy, the stories of Amanda Lee Koe encompass a skewed world fraught with prestige anxiety, moral relativism, sexual frankness, and the improbable necessity of human connection. Told in strikingly original prose, these are fictions that plough, relentlessly, the possibilities of understanding Singapore and her denizens discursively, off-centre. Ministry of Moral Panic is an extraordinary debut collection and the introduction of a revelatory new voice.

The Chinese people have a history of 5,000 years of civilization. Information about the origins of Chinese traditional festivals not only helps us to understand the customs and everyday habits of the Chinese but also their rich cultural heritage. The reader will be intrigued to learn that many of the stories associated with Chinese festivals have evolved with the changes in the development of Chinese civilization and as a consequence have become an integral part of Chinese culture. Because of the progress of science and technology, and the gradual shedding of ethnic traditions for modern and universal ways, many Chinese are no longer able to tell how their festivals originated. This is especially true of Chinese communities outside their homeland. This book on the origins of the festivals and popular stories associated with them will help the reader to appreciate how the celebration of these festivals acted as a social glue in identifying and helping the Chinese stick together as a race throughout their long history and wherever they are found. .

The maestro of political plays is back and his latest offering in a decade, Fear of Writing, is a groundbreaking commentary with its finger on the political pulse of Singapore today, first staged by Theatreworks in 2011 to critical acclaim. In Fear of Writing, a playwright struggles with writer’s block, a director and producer bemoan their failure to get a government license to stage their play, and a father writes to his daughter overseas. Seemingly disparate elements are woven together, while the line between art, performance and reality begin to blur dramatically as the play reaches its chilling conclusion.Fear of Writing is a play that will haunt you while compelling you to decide where you stand on the issues of control and censorship.“[A]n important summation work at Tan's mid-point career. More than any other work in the Singapore canon, it questions the point and purpose of making theatre in Singapore.” —Helmi Yusof, "The finest plays in 50 years", The Business Times“Fear of Writing is an urgent and courageous piece of work.” —Adeline Chia, The Straits Times“A scathing indictment. This collection of four plays by Alfian Sa’at explores the themes that have become a hallmark of the playwright’s work: national identity, racial relations, and the resistance of individuals against authoritarian systems. In The Optic Trilogy, the surfacing of buried secrets and repressed memories profoundly alters the way a man and woman see each other. In Fugitives, the members of a family discover that their self-definition relies on their interactions with ‘outsiders’ who exist beyond their comfort zones. In Homesick, a diasporic Singaporean family, quarantined during the SARS crisis, evaluate the meanings of home. And in sex.violence.blood. gore, the facade of a rigid, orderly society is peeled away to reveal chaotic passions.
