A bestseller in China and now translated into English and updated with recent events, Alibaba by Liu Shiying and Martha Avery tells the remarkable story behind the Internet phenomenon Alibaba.com and its founder Jack Ma, a man Barron 's named one of the World's Top 30 CEOs in 2008. Ma's rise to prominence presents a riveting Despite growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution—in a period of total state control of the economy—he developed the keen entrepreneurial instincts that propelled him to billionaire status and enabled him to build a company outside the usual government channels. These instincts and habits incorporated martial arts training and allowed him to recognize, early on, that the Internet could leverage his company to rapid growth and also transform the way business is done around the world. Alibaba.com, where businesses can buy and sell everything from air beds to zippers, started with a modest initial investment of $60,000 and has grown exponentially since its founding in 1999 to become the world's biggest business-to-business Web site. In 2007 it became the second largest IPO in history (after Google), and Fast Company has named it one of the world's most innovative companies. As a result, smart investors and technology insiders will be keeping a close eye on Alibaba for years to come. Uncle Anthony's Unabridged Analogies : Quotes and Proverbs for Lawyers and Lecturers

from RM86.35 MYR

Unit price
per

Uncle Anthony's Unabridged Analogies offers an extensive and unique collection of thousands of topically-organized proverbs, quotations, and sayings drawn from a wide range of well-known and time-honored sources as the Bible, Shakespeare, Lincoln, Churchill, and hundreds more, as well as some lesser-known, but insightful, observers of life and the individual and collective challenges, frailties, and strengths that we all encounter. The author's fascination with collecting quotations began in high school and continued through college and law school; and over the past 30 years his high school index box has become a foot locker filled with quotes that he has found useful for writing or speaking on legal and other topics. Since ancient Egypt every civilization has collected proverbs. In the English language, The Proverbs of Alfred, (1150-80), is one of the earliest known collections of proverbs. In North America, Poor Richard's, (1732-57) by Benjamin Franklin is probably the most celebrated collection of proverbs. Proverbs often contradict one another. You can easily find one maxim that cancels another. The wisdom that advises us to look before we leap also warns us that if we hesitate all is lost; that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but out of sight, out of mind. So what can we learn from that? Simply that life is full of contradictions, and that proverbs and maxims, etc., reflect and express these disagreements, and that many apothegms are more witty than true. All of us, not just trial lawyers, recite famous quotes and proverbs to better express ourselves. Adages are the wit of the inarticulate. Proverbs are the gospel of the poor. Folk sayings are the college of the masses. More Proverbs are what a people any people believe, cherish, and teach their young. They are those harvested crops of knowledge and experience with which the dead dower each generation of the living. Shakespeare has a phrase that We patch grief with proverbs. The author has tried to do more than that. He has patched his ignorance and verbal impotence with them. The Proverb is often reason laid bare, arguments stripped of fat, complexity clarified beyond this interpretation. The author views proverbs as the precious distillation of what many great men have learned from centuries of experience. Aristotle considered apothegms the product of intellectual maturity and, recognizing their enormous power, declared it unbecoming for the young to utter maxims! As the author's Uncle Anthony used to say, echoing the sentiments of Peter Anderson, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Quotations found in books of that stuff are like bullpens for lawyers when you find yourself in a jam you can go to your best quote like a good closer or middle relief pitcher. The author has included his personal favorites for each category; that is, for almost every topic in this book he has found an extract from the Bible, Ambrose Bierce, Winston Churchill, Will Rogers, William Shakespeare and Mark Twain; and on purely legal topics he has added two of his all-time heroic former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., and former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Michael A. Musmanno. The great thing about a reference book of quotations (whether they are proverbs or sayings) is that if you don t have an Uncle Anthony from Philly or an Aunt Mary from Brooklyn, you can borrow any of the sayings in this book and loan them to one of your own aunts and uncles.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, this extraordinary series continues to amaze and captivate its readers with detailed insight into the lives and work of music's geniuses. Unlike other composer biographies that focus narrowly on the music, this series explores the personal history of each composer and the social context surrounding the music. In a precise, engaging, and authoritative manner, each volume combines a vivid portrait of the master musicians' inspirations, influences, life experiences, even their weaknesses, with an accessible discussion of their work-all in roughly 300 pages. Further, each volume offers superb reference material, including a detailed life and times chronology, a complete list of works, a personalia glossary highlighting the important people in the composer's life, and a select bibliography. Under the supervision of music expert and series general editor Stanley Sadie, Master Musicians will certainly proceed to delight music scholars, seriousmusicians, and all music lovers for another hundred years. In this edition, Edward Garden assesses the operas, ballets, and other works against the background of Tchaikovsky's eventful life; his ill-judged marriage, his curious pen-friendship with his patron Nadezhda von Meck, and his relationship with Balakirev and other Russian composers. Garden also examines the conflicting theories on the manner of Tchaikovsky's death and has updated the bibliography and other appendices.

Cloister Walk

from RM25.62 MYR

Unit price
per

Why would a married woman with a thoroughly Protestant background and often more doubt than faith be drawn to the ancient practice of monasticism, to a community of celibate men whose days are centered around a rigid schedule of prayer, work, and scripture? This is the question that poet Kathleen Norris asks us as, somewhat to her own surprise, she found herself on two extended residencies at St. John's Abbey in Minnesota. Part record of her time among the Benedictines, part meditation on various aspects of monastic life, The Cloister Walk demonstrates, from the rare perspective of someone who is both an insider and outsider, how immersion in the cloistered world -- its liturgy, its ritual, its sense of community -- can impart meaning to everyday events and deepen our secular lives. In this stirring and lyrical work, the monastery, often considered archaic or otherworldly, becomes immediate, accessible, and relevant to us, no matter what our faith may be.* A New York Times bestseller for 23 weeks* A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

Negotiating With The Dead - A Writer On Writing

from RM14.19 MYR

Unit price
per

What is the role of the Writer? Prophet? High Priest of Art? Court Jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain--or excuse!--their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as "gifted", who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift? Atwood's wide reference to other writers, living and dead, is balanced by anecdotes from her own experiences, both in Canada and elsewhere. The lightness of her touch is offset by a seriousness about the purpose and the pleasures of writing, and by a deep familiarity with the myths and traditions of western literature. Margaret Atwood was born in 1939 in Ottawa and grew up in northern Quebec, Ontario, and Toronto. She received her undergraduate degree from Victoria College at the University of Toronto and her master's degree from Radcliffe College. Throughout her thirty years of writing, Atwood has received numerous awards and honorary degrees. Hew newest novel, The Blind Assassin, won the 2000 Booker Prize for Fiction. She is the author of more than twenty-five volumes of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction and is perhaps best known for her novels, which include Alias Grace (1996), The Robber Bride (1994), Cat's Eye (1988), The Handmaid's Tale (1983), Surfacing (1972) and The Edible Woman (1970). Acclaimed for her talent for portraying both personal lives and worldly problems of universal concern, Atwood's work has been published in more than thirty-five languages, including Japanese, Turkish, Finnish, Korean, Icelandic, and Estonian.

from RM14.19 MYR

The revelatory memoir of one of New Labor’s three founding architects is devoted to the "soap opera" years of Labour government and the breakdown of relationships between Mandelson, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown Drawing heavily on detailed diary notes he took during the events that shaped the British government for more than 25 years. Peter Mandelson tells his story of a life played out in the back rooms and on the front lines of the Labour Party during its unprecedented three terms in government in this mixture of autobiography, personal reflection, and political history. He began writing the book while serving as European Commissioner and completed it since leaving office in May 2010. His revelations include that the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown became so hostile that Blair described his chancellor as "mad, bad, dangerous, and beyond redemption" and likened Brown's behaviour to that of a "mafioso" in his dealings with him. Much has been written about Mandelson as the person at the heart of the New Labour project, but here is the unvarnished truth from the man himself.

John Donne

John Donne's poetry is provocatively illuminated in this new collection of essays. The recently influential critical methods of historicism, feminism, psychoanalysis and deconstruction are variously employed to explore Donne's ambivalent relationship to language, women, love, self, God and society. New critical approaches do not dominate the volume, however. Older forms of criticism are also represented, so that the old and the new may illuminate and interrogate each other. The introduction explicitly foregrounds some of the key differences and continuities between old and new versions of literary criticism, exploring the ideas and assumptions underlying each and offering insights into Donne in relation to them.

This book tells the story of Dalí's life and explores the meaning of his Surrealist paintings. It goes beyond his fine art practice and discusses his venture into the commercial world from his extravagant jewelry to his cheeky design for the Chupa Chups lollipops. Surrealism is revealed as a way of life; illustrations bring to life the extraordinary Dream Ball at the Coq Rouge, his fabulous home at Port Lligat, and his underwater fantasy at the World Fair's Surrealist pavilion. Fun, provoking, and endlessly frustrating, Dalí is brought under the spotlight.Catherine Ingram brings her specialized knowledge to the book, while Andrew Rae, an award-winning illustrator, vividly portrays the text. This title is not appropriate for ages under 18.

A delightful, delicious, and best-selling account of the gustatory pleasures to be found throughout France, from the beloved author of A Year in Provence. The French celebrate food and drink more than any other people, and Peter Mayle shows us just how contagious their enthusiasm can be. We visit the Foire aux Escargots. We attend a truly French marathon, where the beverage of choice is Chateau Lafite-Rothschild rather than Gatorade. We search out the most pungent cheese in France, and eavesdrop on a heated debate on the perfect way to prepare an omelet. We even attend a Catholic mass in the village of Richerenches, a sacred event at which thanks are given for the aromatic, mysterious, and breathtakingly expensive black truffle. With Mayle as our charming guide, we come away satisfied (if a little hungry), and with a sudden desire to book a flight to France at once.

The New Market Wizards : Conversations with America's Top Traders

from RM13.53 MYR

Taps into the minds of today’s trading superstars to reveal the secrets of their astonishing success In these absorbing interviews with star performers in the financial markets, Schwager humanizes the mechanics and psychology behind the trading world in such sophisticated instruments as currencies, stock options, commodity futures, and mutual-fund accounts by individuals, investment firms and group-trading computerized "money machines." One trader focuses on market response to news events, another calculates mathematical probabilities--one even cocks an ear to the noise level on the exchange floor. All rank assiduous research, self-confidence, a specific plan and the courage to cut losses among essentials to success. Few consider their work gambling, but Schwager entertainingly argues that a successful trader needs many of the qualities of a good poker player. Though the subject matter is esoteric, there is much here to attract the general reader, and Schwager appends a "primer" of technical basics.  You may not know their names, but they are the trading elite―a select group of super-money makers whose trading prowess has become the stuff of legend. They are speculators in everything from stocks and bonds to options and commodity futures who make millions―often in a matter of hours―and leave their peers in the dust. In this enthralling sequel to his international bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews these stars, asking the questions that everyone with an interest in the financial markets would love know the answers to and receiving the kind of frank, occasionally bewildering answers that make this book as much a page-turner as its predecessor.

The full story of a remarkable woman who has become legendary in the history of the French Resistance. In May 1943, a young Frenchwoman called Lucie Aubrac engineered the escape of her husband Raymond from the clutches of Klaus Barbie, the feared Gestapo chief later known as the 'Butcher of Lyon'. When Raymond was arrested again that June, Lucie mounted a second astonishing rescue, ambushing the prison van that was transporting him. Spirited out of France with her husband by the RAF, she arrived in London a heroine. However, in 1983 Klaus Barbie made the bombshell claim that the Aubracs had become informers in 1943, betraying their comrades. The French press and the couple themselves furiously denounced this 'slander', but as worrying inconsistencies were spotted in Lucie's story, doubts emerged that have never quite gone away.?? Who was Lucie Aubrac? What did she really do in 1943? And was she truly the spirit of la vraie France, or a woman who could not resist casting herself as a heroine, whatever the cost to the truth??? Siân Rees' penetrating account is the first full English-language biography of this extraordinary woman.

The Sound Of Sch

Co-winner of the Singapore Literature Prize 2016 for English Non-FictionCan a life weave along through the same notes and yet come to play forth different sounds? The Sound of Sch (pronounced S-C-H) is the true story of a journey with mental illness, beautifully told by Danielle Lim from a time when she grew up witnessing her uncle's untold struggle with a crippling mental and social disease, and her mother's difficult role as caregiver. The story takes place between 1961 and 1994, backdropped by a fast-globalising Singapore where stigmatisation of persons afflicted with mental illness nevertheless remains deep-seated. Unflinchingly raw and honest in its portrayal of living with schizophrenia, The Sound of Sch is a moving account of human resiliency and sacrifice in the face of brokenness.

Reagan on Leadership

from RM16.42 MYR

Unit price

Ronald Reagan was elected to lead a dispirited country that had lost its way. Overseas, governments tottered in the face of an expansive Soviet empire, and U.S. citizens fell prey to cold-blooded terrorists. At home, a listless economy produced more unemployment than jobs, and a demoralized military hunkered down in timidity. America had become a land of limits rather than of opportunity. "If you measure leadership of the American presidency in terms of changing the mindset of multiple constituencies, as I do, then Ronald Reagan will be regarded as one of the greatest presidents of this century. Finally, we have a terrific book on Reagan and his uncanny and important ability to lead." — Warren Bennis, coauthor of Leaders and author of Organizing Genius How Reagan turned the country around is an inspiration for leaders everywhere. This remarkable book gives you the keys to his leadership skills and shows how they can be transferred seamlessly to today's business world. Based on new interviews with some of Reagan's closest advisers, Reagan on Leadership presents an inside look into the day-to-day executive style of one of our century's most successful statesmen. You learn his secrets of management success, such as how to hire the right people, negotiate from strength, move an audience, overcome failure, and, perhaps most important, communicate an inspiring vision. With wit and insight, author James Strock captures the essence of a man who changed the course of history. The Reagan you meet here was a leader of uncanny strength, whose steely determination never flagged, not even when he suffered political setbacks, not even when he took a bullet in the chest. Ronald Reagan triumphed over challenges people in business face every day. With this book as your guide, so can you.
