The author has also painstakingly conducted oral interviews with many people encountered by the family, which makes her story-telling sound even more vivid.Along the way, this book highlights the enterprise of the early forefathers in settling down in Malaya, to the patriotic idealism of Overseas Chinese youths who firmly believed in helping to set up a democratic and equal New China in Singapore and Malaya as well as other parts of Southeast Asia, to the kampong spirit of large extended families who stayed together and took care of each other during the developing years of Malaya. I found this book slightly choppy to read in some parts, but overall a very interesting, well-researched and well-written memoir of the author's family history. I would highly recommend this to all Singaporean youths who are interested in hearing about history from the perspective of a local pioneer.
